Paul-Émile VICTOR (1907-1995) polar explorer.... - Lot 339 - Ader
Paul-Émile VICTOR (1907-1995) polar explorer. Autograph manuscript signed as "Director of the French Polar Expeditions, Executive President of the Foundation for the Safeguard of Nature", Some reflections concerning hunting and hunters, [10 October 1972]; 6 pages in- 4. Article for the Annuaire de la chasse. Hunting has become "a disorderly and irresponsible killing. By the system which regulates it, it tarnishes the image of France"... He himself is not a hunter anymore. "I used to hunt a lot, in Greenland or in the north of Alaska. But almost always to live. Often to survive: polar bear, seal, narwhal, polar hare, ptarmigan. I learned to respect the animals I was hunting. [...] Bad hunters? They are those who kill for the sake of killing, which is unacceptable. Those who shoot at everything that lives"... And to illustrate these remarks with a few anecdotes, repeating the refrain: "Do you call that hunting?"... It would be impossible to ban hunting in France, but it would be necessary to revise the rules "which are outdated by the current need to protect nature and animals and by the general interest which must take precedence over the particular interest.... No gun should be sold, no hunting permit should be issued without a serious preliminary examination"...
