Jean-Baptiste Annibal AUBERT-DUBAYET (1757-1797)... - Lot 350 - Ader
Jean-Baptiste Annibal AUBERT-DUBAYET (1757-1797) general, deputy, minister and diplomat. 6 L.A., 1795-1797, to his wife; 10 pages in-4 and 7 pages in-fol, 3 on his letterhead as Ambassador of the French Republic to the Ottoman Porte, one address (qqs small repaired cracks). Nice set of letters from the general and the ambassador to Turkey to his wife. Paris 22 ventôse II (11 march 1795). He was with Merlin "in the mountains of the Palatinate as a simple volunteer, when I received the decree of the committee which appointed me to the command in chief of the forces intended for a double expedition in the seas of India. If new circumstances revoked this order, I would still return as a volunteer to the army of the Rhine; but intimately convinced that a citizen owes all of himself to his country, I will go, my good friend, to bring Liberty and justice in another emisphere"... He is in Paris, greatly occupied by the organization of the army that he must command. And because of the long distance from his wife and daughter that he foresees, he tells them what they have to live without him. Finally he asks his wife that his daughter be well brought up, "and repeat to her often that her father is far away to make war to all the Kings, for the support of the republic"... Toulon 9 prairial IV (May 29, 1796). He sends her money and makes recommendations to her, before leaving for Turkey... - 1st messidor (June 19). "Everything is ready, my good friend, but the calms and the stay of the English on Toulon prevent our departure. It is thus necessary to wait for a gust of wind ".... - 11 messidor (June 30). Last recommendations before the departure, and affectionate thoughts for their daughter Constance... Pera lez Constantinople 5 pluviôse V [23 January 1797]. He had his "two audiences in the most flattering way, and according to a new ceremonial or one removed all that the old one had of humiliating for the Christian ambassadors"... He encourages his wife and his daughter to come to join him, by embarking in Toulon on the frigate Diane. But he leaves her free to wait "another year in France, to see the events which will follow the general peace"... - March 28, 1797. Tender recommendations to his wife who will soon leave with Constance to join him... Attached are 14 autograph manuscripts: drafts of "fragmens" or poems, including a note on his father; plus a letter from Captain Meinetton to Mme Aubert-Dubayet (Toulon 1797); the draft of a memorandum from his widow (remarried to Carra Saint-Cyr), for reimbursement of his travel expenses; a l.a.s. from her (1803) to her son-in-law the gal Charpentier; a l.a.s. from the chevalier de Panat to Constance Aubert, countess Charpentier; This one, repatriated after the death of her husband, became the countess Carra Saint Cyr. We enclose two letters from her, one to her daughter who married General Charpentier.
