Victor de Riquetti, Marquis de MIRABEAU (1715-1789) "The Fri - Lot 504
Victor de Riquetti, Marquis de MIRABEAU (1715-1789) "The Friend of Men," economist and agronomist, father of the great orator. L.A.S., "Kelhaine" [Kelheim in Bavaria] May 2, 1742, to his mother the Marquise de Mirabeau in Aix; 2 and a half pages in-4, address with postmarks (heavy wetness due to disinfection, wear to the 2nd leaf and to the folds with splits). Interesting account of the Bavarian campaign, while serving as an officer in his father's regiment. "Always marching through detestable times and paths, war, plague and famine, this is where we are. Since our entry into Bavaria, we have only found a country that the enemies had devastated since the capture of Lintz, and misery has introduced a plague that is killing all its inhabitants. We were lodged in a village near the cemetery and in the afternoon we placed 14 of them [...] We are marching at a snail's pace in a ruined country, the season still promising nothing [...] the Bohemian army has companies of 4 men and the strongest of 12"... Marshal de Broglie is waiting for Belle-Isle "to hand over the army to him and to come and command it. We need his presence as much as the Bohemian army did when he went there [...] The enemies are entrenched under Passau where they are gathering, and we imagine that our first operations will tend to force them"...
