Siege of MONTAUBAN. [Hector JOLY]. Particular history, of the most memorable things that happened at the Siege of Montauban: & of the progress of this siege. Drawn up in the form of a journal. S.l.n.n., 1624. In-12 (16,5 x 10 cm), 192 pages; bound in contemporary vellum (boards warped, accidents to endpapers with handwritten annotations: light wetness on a few leaves). Rare work relating the siege of Montauban which opposed from August to November 1621 the armies of Louis XIII to the Protestants of Montauban in the context of the Huguenot rebellions. Dedicated to Duke Henri II of Rohan, leader of the Protestant resistance, the text is said to have been composed by Hector Joly (ca. 1575-?), professor and minister of religion in Montauban; it is also attributed to the magistrate Samuel de Bonencontre (1570-1643), who is quoted in the text; the dedication is signed "A.I.D.". There is an interesting description of the city (p. 29 to 41). This episode of the Huguenot wars was important for the Protestants who succeeded, in spite of their inferiority in number, in putting in check the royal army; it made the admiration of the contemporaries and caused many publications of which this one which appeared for the first time in 1622.
