*PIERRE BONNARD (1867-1947 )La Revue blanche.... - Lot 9 - Ader
*PIERRE BONNARD (1867-1947 )La Revue blanche. Poster. 1894. Lithograph. [582 x 778]. Bouvet 30, printed in colors. Beautiful proof on thin vellum, formerly canvas-backed. Numerous fine creases and cracks on the surface, with tiny tears of paper along the lower left edge. Margins slightly reduced. First poster executed for the Revue blanche, a French artistic and literary journal, founded in 1891, which lasted until 1903. " Many of the Nabis' wide-ranging interests converge in Bonnard's design. This picture, for example, exudes the atmosphere of the lively, bustling city of Paris: a street urchin dashes past an elegant Parisian lady who wears a boad-brimmed hat and is demonstratively holding an issue of La revue blanche. Japanese influences are evident in the abstract rendering of the figures. Together the silhouettes form a large black area, even though individual traits can still be recognized. The influence of the shadow theatre is also discernible, for the figures can be seen as shadow puppets. Despite multiple sources of inspiration, the poster presents a harmonious picture. Remarkably, the image does not really serve to illustrate the text; instead, the letters are part of the image. In the foreground, the lettering is integrated with the figures. Together the letters A and V, for instance, form a closed umbrella. The title of the magazine is repeated endlessly on the placards in the background, turning the text into a decorative pattern."
