*PIERRE BONNARD (1867-1947 )Répertoire des pantins. Suite of 6 covers for poems by Franc-Nohain on melodies by Claude Terrasse. Paris, Le Mercure de France ed. 1898. Lithography. Each issue [250 x 330] or [270 x 350]. Bouvet 46 to 51; Aitken 111 to 116. Very nice proofs on glazed vellum, complete with the printed musical score. Minimal soiling or small rings of moisture at the foot of some of the covers. Ex-coll. H. M. Petiet (Lugt 5031). The Théâtre des Pantins, a small puppet theater, was founded by Alfred Jarry, Franc-Nohain and Claude Terrasse. Bonnard helped them to model the puppets. The stage was set up at Claude Terrasse's house, 6 rue Ballu (9e). In 1898, Jarry had his Ubu roi (created in 1896 at the Théâtre de l'œuvre) revived there using these puppets. He himself designed the lithographed covers for the plays extracted from Ubu roi. Vuillard created the decor in the form of very colorful pyrotechnics. These amusing plays remained confidential and the public was very limited. Claude Terrasse (1867-1923) is a French composer of operas and operettas. During his military service, in Grenoble, he met Pierre Bonnard. In 1890, he married the sister of the latter, Andrée. In the 1890s, he frequented the avant-garde and the artistic-literary circles around the magazines Le Mercure de France and the Revue blanche. He was notably very close to Stéphane Mallarmé, Érik Satie and Misia Natanson. He set to music the play Ubu roi by Alfred Jarry in 1896. Bonnard painted his portrait several times.
