ALSACIAN SCHOOL circa 1500 Christ with outrages Oak... - Lot 1 - Ader
ALSACIAN SCHOOL circa 1500 Christ with outrages Oak panel with parquet 60 x 42 cm (Old restorations) Christ is blindfolded, a rare motif in Christian art. Fra Angelico thus represents, on several occasions, the outraged Christ in the house of the High Priest. This representation is that of a game already practiced in Antiquity and which in the Middle Ages was called "qui fery", i.e. "who hits? One of the players, blindfolded, must guess who is going to hit him. In the Passion mysteries played on the parvis in the Middle Ages, two executioners, Marquin and Haquin, play "qui fery" with Christ as their victim. It is night outside, according to the Gospel account, which states that since Judas went out to betray Jesus "it is night" (Jn 13:21-38).
