Hollow porcelain bowl in the form of a lotus flower enameled in underglaze blue and iron red, China, Wanli mark and period (1573-1619 )Resting on an upright foot, it depicts an open lotus flower with its two rows of petals. In the center is a medallion surrounded by two friezes of ruyi heads containing the Sanskrit character lantsa "hrīḥ" sinicized into a sigil ideogram. The inner row of petals is painted with tri-lobed designs on rounded tips, each finely outlined with iron-red enamel while the outer lotus petals end in an embrace. The reverse of the bowl is girded by a double row of sixteen molded petals, one alternating eight characters in Sinicized Sanskrit lantsa: Oṃ a hrīḥ mi tā hrīḥ bha hrīḥ (the mantra of Amitābha) and eight flower designs. The other simply depicting the veins of the petals. Six-character Wanli mark within a double circle in underglaze blue on the base.
