Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858), Monkey tied under a cherry tree, Ôka ni tsunagi zaru - 桜下に繋ぎ猿, Japan, ca. 1832/1835Estamp nishiki-e, ink and polychrome on paper, ô tanzaku format depicting an upright monkey, wearing a red coat spotted with white, climbing onto the platform at the top of the pole to which it is attached. The pole is next to a cherry tree, and petals fall from the flowers above. Illustrated at the top left with a poem by Ki no Haseo from the collection Wakan rôeishû (based on a Chinese poem by Du Fu) 人煙一穏秋村僻猿叫三聱暁峡深 - "In autumn in the lonely village, so little smoke escapes, only the cry of the monkeys in the deep valley can be heard."
