Utagawa Kokunimasa (1874-1944), triptych: Sato Tadanobu and the overturned go board, Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912 )Prints, ink and polychrome on paper depicting the famous warrior Sato no Tadanobu, Yoshitsune's faithful servant, fighting for his life. After a former mistress betrays his hiding place, he uses a game of go to defend himself against more than two hundred policemen who attack him. He fights two opponents on the veranda of the house, a clawed weapon flying through the air beside him. Three enemies are piled up at the foot of the veranda, knocked down by the single go game board, the game pieces scattered all around them. A nobleman on horseback waits in the courtyard, pointing his fan, accompanied by additional policemen carrying flaming torches. Dated in the 28th year of Meiji: 1895. sheet size: 37,3 x 24,8 cm
