CASTAIGNE (Gabriel de). The Works of the R. P. Gabriel de Vastaigne, Both Medicinal and Chymical, divided into four main tracts. I. The Terrestrial Paradise. II. The great miracle of the metallic nature. III. The Potable Gold. IV. Le Thresor Philosophique de la Medecine Mettallique. Paris : Jean d'Houry, 1661. - 4 parts in one volume in-8, soft parchment, smooth spine (period binding). First collective edition containing 4 treatises of the Franciscan alchemist Gabriel de Castaigne (1562?-1630?). The "general title is placed by J. B. de la Noue, reviser of the works of Castaigne, at the head of the Paradis Terrestre. The other treaties have separate paginations. This Terrestrial Paradise is a mixture of recipes of medicine and operations of alchemy, whose base is always the drinking Gold. The works of this R. P. Cordelier are very rare and sought after by adepts" (Caillet, 2059). The general title is dated 1661, those of the treatises are dated 1660. Pages 10 to 57 of the second part include the "Œuvre philosophique de Jean Saunier". At the end, in the original edition, one finds the "Particular method for making the marvelous ointment called Manus Dei, suitable for making a plaster by means of which one can cure a quantity of external illnesses of the human body". Copy in contemporary binding. Blackened parchment, with creases and traces of writing. Old handwriting opposite the title of the "Great Miracle". Mottling.
