STONE OF SAINT JOSEPH. Idea theologiæ sacramentalis.... - Lot 36 - Ader
STONE OF SAINT JOSEPH. Idea theologiæ sacramentalis. Paucis multa complectens des Sacramentis in genere, & in specie. Paris : Georges Josse, 1640 - In-12, red morocco, boards decorated in the Du Seuil style, gilt arms in the center, richly decorated ribbed spine, gilt border inside, gilt edges, case (period binding, 20th century case). First edition dedicated to the archbishop of Bordeaux Henri d'Escoubleau de Sourdis (1593-1645), of this theological treatise composed by the late Pierre de Saint-Joseph (1594-1662), one of the fervent opponents of the Jansenists. It includes a frontispiece engraved by Jean Picart. Precious copy, entirely ruled, bound with the arms of Armand Jean Du Plessis, cardinal duke of RICHELIEU (1585-1642). After the death of the cardinal, it became part of the library of the Sorbonne College, whose characteristic stamp is found on the third leaf and the handwritten ex-libris "ex bibliotheca Sorbonica" on the title, the latter having been crossed out. This stamp is the one that was affixed to the books from 1743 on. This library was not linked to the present Sorbonne library, and the books that made up the library began to be dispersed apparently at the end of the 18th century. There are also two other bookplates, also from the 18th century, one on the title, from a certain "Carlus Diaconi", and the other on the first endpaper, whose name has been crossed out, with the indication "demeurant à St Pierre En Val". It may be the same person. Small cracks and restorations at the hinge of the first plate. Two small damages to the head cover.
