ELUARD (Paul) - ERNST (Max). Les Malheurs... - Lot 140 - Ader
ELUARD (Paul) - ERNST (Max). Les Malheurs des immortels. Paris : La Revue Fontaine, [1945]. - In-8, half leather imitation elephant skin, smooth spine, untrimmed, cover preserved (L. Strid). Second edition after the very rare first edition of 1922. This work is one of the four composed in collaboration by Max Ernst and Paul Éluard, but it is certainly the most astonishing. It is composed of 21 black reproductions of collages made by Max Ernst, in front of which, except for the one on the frontispiece, is the poem written by four hands by the artist and the writer to "reveal" the image without describing it. ONE OF 50 COPIES ON PUR FIL DU MARAIS, second paper after 10 copies on Madagascar. A beautiful copy bound by the Swedish bookbinder Lars Strid, well preserved despite some browning on the cover. It includes some notes in pen. Provenance: Ragnar vol Holten (1934-2009), Swedish painter, engraver and illustrator, according to a note on a printed sheet left inside.
