Jean-Baptiste AUGUSTIN (1759-1832). 2 drawings, 2 autograph manuscripts and one partly autograph manuscript; 21 x 17 cm and 18,5 x 14,5 cm; 3 pages in-4 and 4 pages in-fol. Nice set on the painter and miniaturist. Two studies of women in black pencil and wash. Graceful portrait of a young girl. Study for a portrait [the Duchess of Angouleme?], with autograph annotations in the margin: dimensions of the bust, "width of the body, the body is a little strong; dark green curtain," etc. Autobiographical note for a directory [ca. 1825], Note for M. Augustin, as well as on his wife (also a painter, she was his pupil): biographical information, his main works, his jobs: "Mr Augustin paints in oil in miniature and on enamel, famous especially in these last two genres [...] Appointed in 1819 first painter in miniature of the King's chamber and cabinet"... Long list of works, partly autograph: nearly 160 views of landscapes or monuments in Spain, from "View of the Arab Tribune in the Mosque of Cordoba" to "View of an Aqueduct near the Alhambra" Attached is a L.S. from Count Daru to Augustin, May 3, 1807 (1 p. in-4 on letterhead, address): in view of the works he exhibited at the last Salon, "His Majesty has judged you worthy of obtaining a prize of encouragement. A medal worth 500 francs is intended for you, and M. Denon, Director General of the Museums, is specially charged with giving it to you"...; a receipt signed by H. Parquez for the purchase of miniatures from M. de Coincy, Augustin's descendant, and their sale to Pierpont Morgan.
