Pierre-Jean DAVID D'ANGERS (1788-1856). 3 L.A.S., 1829-1839, to Alfred de Vigny; 1 page in-4 and 3 pages in-8, 2 addresses (the last one split; stamps of the Sangnier Archives). Beautiful correspondence from the sculptor to the poet. 26 December 1829. Sending a box to Weimar, he suggests to Vigny to join his works to send them "to the illustrious Goethe... You would make him very happy by putting him in a position to know the sublime productions of your genius". He adds that he has finished "the marble bust of Chateaubriand, I dare not ask you to come and see it, the weather is so bad"... Thursday morning [March 9, 1837]. Letter of introduction in favor of Mickiewicz who asked him to introduce him to Vigny: ... "he has a great need to consult you on a matter of great importance" .... 22 July 1839. He informs Vigny of the last misfortunes of their friend Mickiewicz, whose wife has become insane: ...". The generous feelings that you express in favor of this great poet do not surprise me from you, you who unite to a sublime genius a heart so full of noble feelings". He regrets not having more often the happiness to enjoy his conversation, but an excessive work prevents him from leaving his retreat: "I would like to try to make myself worthy of all that you said and thought of my works and finally worthy of the friendship that you always showed me. Will you not come one day to see the statuary of the rue d'Assas?
