Georges ROUAULT. Autograph manuscript signed... - Lot 39 - Ader
Georges ROUAULT. Autograph manuscript signed (monogram), October 1939; 15 pages in-4, numerous erasures and corrections. Set of drafts of poems and prose, some fragments of which were published in Le Cirque de l'Étoile filante, in Soliloques, in Miserere or in Sur l'Art et sur la vie. The manuscript opens with a poem for Le Cirque de l'Étoile filante, then one of the Poèmes du Maudit, dedicated "to my beloved mother"... This is followed by reflections [Signalement du peintre inconnu, then Messieurs Peintres, and Homo homini lupus, etc.] on life, liberty, man, art, the situation of the artist, art criticism, politics, with sharp attacks on Hitler, etc. Rouault comments on the final date of October 1939: "I should put 1897-1939 [...] not being very conformist (to say the contrary) most of these writings date shortly after the death of my boss with whom I no longer spoke. In the furrow of the sorrows they were worked or came like that with the chance of the voyages in various barbed wires where I passed "... One joined a " Research for typefaces of the Circus of the Shooting Star " (1 page calligraphed taking again the liminary poem, plus an essay of typography).
