Albert CALMETTE (1863-1933) physician and... - Lot 229 - Ader
Albert CALMETTE (1863-1933) physician and bacteriologist, inventor of BCG. L.A.S., Saigon April 11 [1892], to his friend Depasse, physician to the colonial troops in Phnom-Penh; 4 pages in-8. Interesting letter from Indochina, where he was sent by Pasteur to found the Pasteur Institute in Saigon in 1891 and to produce rabies vaccines. At the same time, he was conducting research on Chinese yeasts (opium fermentation and alcoholic fermentation of rice), research that is alluded to in this letter. You can count on our visit. My vaccine was worthless last week: the very hot weather we had for a few days spoiled it - but this week I have some very good ones. I am sending you four tubes. Marchoux told you about my stories with Greterin. It is all true. I had a good talk with him. He swore to me that he had never said or let anyone claim that it was my fault that the opium was bad, and that I was not to blame for all these complaints, - but he had been obliged since December not to make any more fermentations at all because, since consumption had doubled as a result of the drop in prices, he had had to deliver all the stock in store as it was being made..."
