MARINE. 2 manuscripts, Saint-Nazaire March... - Lot 287 - Ader
MARINE. 2 manuscripts, Saint-Nazaire March 22 and 24, 1878; 6 1/2 pages in-fol. Handwritten reports on the sinking of the ship Liberté-Pour-Tous, following an exceptional storm on March 22 and 24, 1878. They are intended for the shipowner Gabriel Lauriol and the insurers, and relate the dramatic events that occurred "on board the French three-masted barque Liberté-Pour-Tous, from the Port of Nantes, tonnage 529 tons 71%, Captain Eusèbe François Louis Gauchet, shipowner Gabriel Lauril, fitted out in Saint-Nazaire", caught in a tropical cyclone off the coast of South Africa in the Indian Ocean... These two reports give an account of the damage caused to the ship and its cargo loaded in Bimlipatam (India). The precision in the description of the maneuvers decided upon as the dangers and destruction increased makes this report a very dramatic account...
