FRAGONARD (Jean-Honoré). Figures of the tales of La Fontaine. Paris: P. Didot l'aîné, [1795]. - Album in-4, 355 x 276 : 20 plates, printed cover. Jansenist red morocco, spine ribbed, interior gilt lace, gilt edges (G. Mercier sr de son père 1920). Cohen 574-582. complete album of the 20 beautiful engravings intended to illustrate the tales of La Fontaine published by Pierre Didot in 1795. the project of Pierre Didot had been to make an edition rivaling in beauty with that of the Fermiers généraux (1762) . He entrusted Fragonard with the execution of the drawings. Fragonard, who started around 1780, made only fifty-seven of the eighty planned. Didot printed the text but, in view of the failure of the project, published only two issues of ten engravings each. Of the twenty plates published, sixteen were engraved after the drawings of Fragonard, two after Touzé, one after Mallet and one after Monnet. It is a copy of these two issues that we propose here, with one of the original covers, here printed on blue paper. This cover is interesting because it specifies the title of the engravings as well as the edition of the suites which amounts to 550 on wove paper. We know that there are also at least two suites on Hollande. The proofs presented here would be part of the 400 with the letter, i.e. with the numbers. A very fine copy in full Mercier morocco. Each engraving is mounted on a mitre between two large sheets of vellum paper.
