BORGET (Auguste). Fragments of a trip around the world. Moulins : Desrosiers, [1851]. - In-4 oblong, 230 x 305 : title, (11 ff.), 12 plates. Publisher's red percale, double cold framing on the boards, title in gilt letters in the center of the first board, smooth spine. Forbes, II, n° 1766. - Borba de Moreas, I, 112The very rare first edition of this superb album composed of a title and twelve lithographs by the painter and draftsman Auguste Borget (1808-1877) . Born in Issoudun, friend of Balzac, Borget travelled around the world from 1836 to 1840, visiting America, the Pacific, Asia and India. He brought back from these trips very beautiful paintings which were praised in particular by Baudelaire. The work he offers here is one of the rarest travel albums of this period. Printed in Moulins and certainly printed in small numbers, it appeared in 1851 and not in 1850 as is often reported, recorded in the Bibliographie de la France on January 18, 1851 (n° 280). It is the only printed album testifying of his trip; it proposes 12 original lithographs, in first edition: Windmill on the Banks of the Hudson, opposite New-York. - Our Lady of Glory (in Rio de Janeiro). - A Street in Buenos-Ayres. - A Ravine in the Sierra de Cordova (South America). - A Street in Lima (Peru). - Halt of Chileans in the Plain of Santiago (Chile). - A watering place in Requipa (Peru). - Street and Market in Canton (China). - Honolulu Beach in Oahu (Sandwich Islands). - Balsas (Fishing boats) on the coast of Bolivia. - Passig Bridge and Village, 6 leagues from Manila (Philippines Islands). - Street of Clives, in Calcutta. A copy in the publisher's full cloth boards, without the explanatory leaf of the tenth plate, which is almost always missing and whose existence Forbes doubted. Plate four here depicts a ravine in the Sierra de Cordova, whereas in other copies it depicts a fakir's dwelling on the banks of the Ganges. Spine and edges of boards browned. Some foxing.
