Composite ewer, Safavid Iran, 16th - 17th... - Lot 75 - Ader
Composite ewer, Safavid Iran, 16th - 17th century and Europe, probably Venice, 19th century An engraved copper alloy ewer with an ovoid body resting on a thin cylindrical pedestal with a circular base and topped by a cylindrical neck with a spoon-shaped spout and long curved handle. The safavid body, finely engraved with a dense network of floral interlacing decorated with bifid palmettes and fleurons on a guilloche background. This repertoire repeated on the spout engraved with a mask with a prominent mustache, probably Venetian work of the nineteenth century, as well as the cut of the neck, the pedestal and the handle decorated at both ends of a mascaron. Height : 31 cm Shocks, traces of welding. Provenance: Christie's, Paris, May 24, 2004, lot 38, former collection of Madame Bernheim. If we refer to the ewer 17.190.632 from the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of New York, very similar in shape to ours, the reworking of our ewer was done in the taste of the Venetian brassware of the 16th century. A Composite Ewer, Safavid Iran, 16th-17th century and Europe, probably Venice, 19th century
