Border tile with palmettes decoration, Ottoman Turkey, Iznik, circa 1580 Siliceous ceramic with painted decoration on slip, under transparent glaze of a tapestry composition of arabesques decorated with bifid palmettes deployed around a central fleuron, in white reserve heightened with green on a red background. A turquoise band underlines each edge. 25 x 15.5 cm Some chips on the enamel and on the edge. This type of border tile can still be found in some buildings in Istanbul, such as in the room of Murad III in the Topkapi Palace (1578) or in the Ramazan Efendi mosque (1585). Several are also known in museum collections such as the Louvre Museum in Paris (inv. AD 26684), the Metropolitan Museum in New York (inv. 1971.235.2) or the Benaki Museum in Athens (inv. n°85).
