Portrait of Emperor Ahmad Shah Bahadur, India, West Bengal, Murshidabad, late 18th century Pigments and gold on paper depicting Emperor Muhammad Shah standing on a terrace with red balustrades, facing right. He is wearing a rich gold-plated turban with an aigrette and his moustachioed face is nimbed with gold. He is dressed in a long pink jama with a golden leaf pattern, fastened with a wide golden belt with floral decoration and adorned with long beaded necklaces, a bazuband and holds a sarpush in his left hand. Painting mounted on an album page with salmon margins speckled with silver. Page size : 29,8 x 19,6 cm ; painting size : 22,2 x 13,8 cm Paper slightly warped, rare jumps of polychromy, tiny stains, retouching, legends pencilled on the back. Ahmad Shah Bahadur (r. 1748-54) was the fifteenth emperor to rule the Mughal Empire, which he knew in its decline.
