Portrait of Emperor Ahmad Shah, India, probably Deccan, 18th century Pigments and gold on album page depicting Emperor Ahmad Shah standing, facing left, his bearded face haloed by a blue nimbus with golden rays. He is wearing an orange and green striped turban with a wide gold band and a golden jama with blue flowers on orange pants. He is adorned with long beaded necklaces, rings and a belt and holds a talwar in his left hand, a rondache on the same side. Two flowers frame the painted subject standing out against a dark green background. On the back, calligraphy of seven lines of Persian nasta'liq inscribed in large characters in black ink in reserve on a background of flowery semis, a fragmentary blue margin encircling the whole. Dim. page : 21,8 x 14,3 cm ; dim. painting at sight : 19 x 11 cm ; dim. calligraphy at sight : 21,5 x 12 cm Slight folds and some jumps of polychromy.
