Claude Gellée, known as Le Lorrain (1600-1682)... - Lot 20 - Ader
Claude Gellée, known as Le Lorrain (1600-1682) (after ) Liber Veritatis. [Rome], from the presses of Francesco Bourlie, 1815. Two volumes in-fol. [325 x 480] containing the complete suite of 200 plates. Etching and aquatint by Ludovico Caracciolo. Very nice sepia prints on vellum. Title reported in pen and ink in the second volume. Scattered light foxing (larger or more marked on some leaves). Modest original binding, leather spine decorated, faded. Set. 2 vols. The Liber Veritatis ("Book of Truth" in Latin) is a collection of drawings by Claude Gellée, cataloguing his completed paintings from the years 1635-1636, when he became successful, until his death in 1682. The work is now in the British Museum. The drawings of the Liber Veritatis were rendered in engraving (etching and black manner) by R. Earlom in two volumes in 1774-1777. The distribution of this work was enormous and had a great influence on English landscape art. In 1815, another set - ours - was engraved in etching and aquatint by the Italian engraver L. Caracciolo, an Italian landscape painter who became the protégé of the Duchess of Devonshire, Elizabeth Cavendish, who had moved to Rome after being widowed in 1811.
