Jules CHÉRET (1836-1932) - Lot 26
Jules CHÉRET (1836-1932) The Dance, 1909 Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. Bears an annotation "J. Chéret 1909" in the lower right corner. (Small accidents and restorations). 245 x 150 cm Provenance : Maurice Fenaille Collection. Jules Chéret is universally recognized as the father of the modern poster. He drew more than a thousand of them in the second half of the 19th century. From 1895 onwards - he was nearly 60 years old - he gradually abandoned advertising art to devote himself - which is little known - to large-scale decorative painting. Two patrons, great builders of vast residences, brought him there: Baron Joseph Vitta in Evian and then in Nice and Maurice Fenaille in Neuilly and Pornic, among others. The latter visionary industrialist, scholar and great patron (notably of Rodin) was first his client: his series of posters for the Saxoleine, then Benzo-motor. From 1895, he called on him to compose vast wall decorations for the houses (or palaces) he was building. Their collaboration will last until 1920. In these vast surfaces, Chéret could give free rein to his sense of movement, while paying tribute to his masters Watteau and Tiepolo. These creations have unfortunately followed the fate of the buildings for which they were intended - or have they been dismantled? However, they can still be admired at the Hôtel de Ville de Paris, the Prefecture of Nice and the Jules Chéret Museum. Those that have survived in private hands are extremely rare. To our knowledge, the one we are presenting is the only one that has been presented at public sale for decades. Expert : Alain Weill
