Max WECHSLER (1925-2020) Fantastic composition, 1964 Oil on panel. Signed and dated lower left. 73 x 50 cm This work is recorded in the catalog raisonné of Max Wechsler's work currently being prepared by Christine Fleurent. In the 60s, Max Wechsler painted "figurative compositions in oil divided into a dense biomorphic microcosm of small fairy-like figures. There were curvilinear forms à la Miró, perhaps reminiscent of COBRA, some whimsical and sympathetic accents reminiscent of Dubuffet, the memory of Max Ernst also evoking a late Surrealist universe" ( Andreas Haus in Max Wechsler, Respiration du silence, Berlin, Jovis Art, Ruth Marius, 2012, p. 11). This period is part of the long process that would lead him to his marouflaged papers in the early 80s.
