Two Representations of Indian Monument Gates, India, Company - Lot 239
Two Representations of Indian Monument Gates, India, Company School, ca. 1820 Watercolors on watermarked paper W. Turner & Son depicting two Indian monuments of red sandstone with facades animated with iwans and crowned with chhatris. The first one represents the Darwaza-i Rauza, entrance door of the Taj Mahal in Agra (1632-48), the second one, the Buland Darwaza, entrance door of the Jama mosque in Fatehpur Sikri (1571). 42.6 x 57.5 cm and 43.4 x 57.5 cm A few tears and wetnesses at the edges, light foxing, stains and folds. These two monumental doors mark the entrance to two major monuments of classical Mughal architecture. The Darwaza-i Rauza ("Gate of the Garden" / "of Paradise") or Great Gate opens onto the gardens of the Taj Mahal burial complex built by order of Emperor Shah Jahan (r. 1628-58) in Agra in memory of his favorite Arjumand Banu Begam better known as Mumtaz Mahal who died in 1631. The Buland Darwaza, ("Gate of Victory") is the main entrance to the Jama Mosque in Fatehpur Sikri, a city in northern India near Agra built in 1571 by Emperor Akbar as the new capital of the Mughal Empire. It is in homage to his victory over Gujarat that the Emperor named this great symbol of the building. These two monuments of classical Mughal architecture of the 16th and 17th centuries served as a source of inspiration for many painters in the early 19th century. The multiplication of these views in painting was linked to a strong European and mainly British demand for souvenirs of Indian monuments. It was often on paper imported from Great Britain as evidenced by the watermark W. Turner & Son watermark present on the supports of these two works, that these views were executed. The British Library in London holds other representations of these two doors such as the painting Add.Or.558 for the entrance door of the Taj Mahal and Add.Or.1785 for the Buland Darwaza.
