MAZARINADES. A collection of 136 mazarinades published in 1648 and 1649. Paris, 1648-1649. - 136 pamphlets in 2 volumes in-4, soft parchment, smooth spine, untrimmed (period binding). Precious set of 136 mazarinades published in 1648 and 1649, that is to say among the first published during the Fronde. The very first one was published towards the end of 1648; it is said to be "La Requête des trois états du Gouvernement de l'Île de France au Parlement de Paris". Unfortunately, it does not appear in this collection. The first volume contains 76 pieces and the second 60. They are original documents of the time, each with a particular pagination. Here are some titles: "Relation veritable de ce qui s'est passé à S. Germain en la deputation de la Cour des aydes, pour le retour de leurs Majestez à Paris. Avec la harangue & replique de M. Amelot pr. president on this subject" - "Arrest of the court of Parliament carrying absolution of the calumniating accusation brought against monseigneur the duke of Beaufort by the cardinal Mazarin" - "Arrest of the court of Parliament, carrying defenses has all people estans in this city & false-bourgs of Paris, to change their names, and to disguise themselves in order to leave the said city, on pain of life" - "Manifesto for the gentlemen of the Parliament against Jules Mazarin, disrupter of public peace, enemy of the King and his State. These 136 pieces were published at the end of 1648 and in January and February 1649. They are only the first of a long series of pamphlets and libels, which will count several thousand publications until 1653. Important losses at the top of the spines, on the top of the first cover of the first volume, and on the edges of the boards. Endpapers renewed. The leaves are as often browned or foxed. There are restorations to a few rare pamphlets, one with damage to the text. One or two pamphlets appear incomplete.
