Giovanni Francesco BARBIERI, called IL GUERCINO... - Lot 160 - Ader
Giovanni Francesco BARBIERI, called IL GUERCINO (Cento, 1591 - Bologna, 1666) Recto : The Abduction of Persephone Verso : Two studies for a Sisyphus Pen, brown ink and brown ink wash on paper. Inscribed in pen and ink in the lower right corner: "38". 24,7 x 16,6 cm Provenance: Julius Kronberg (1850-1921), painter and professor at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts. The subject of Sisyphus was treated several times by Guerchin. There is a drawing on this theme in Windsor Castle and another in the Courtauld Institute of Art Gallery (see : Julian Brooks, Guercino Mind to paper, Los Angeles, Getty museum, Getty Publications, 2006, n°23, reproduced p. 73). Another drawing from the Tobey collection was donated to the Metropolitan Museum in New York (see: Linda Wolk-Simon and Carmen C. Bambach, An Italian journey, Drawings from the Tobey Collection Correggio to Tiepolo, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New Haven and London, Yale University Press, 2010, fig 44, reproduced p. 149). His research can be compared to the painting Atlas by Guerchin (see: op. cit. fig. 44.2, p. 150). These leaves probably prepare a painting on the theme of Sisyphus delivered in 1636 by Guerchin to Count Girolamo Ranuzzi of Bologna, now lost.
