Bibliography: X. Salmon, Jacques-André Portail, Paris, " Cahiers du dessin français ", Éditions de Bayser, 1996, p. 20. Jacques-André Portail (1695-1759) was the son of an architect and began his drawing apprenticeship in Brittany with his father. Appointed in 1738 as the King's draughtsman by the Superintendent of Buildings, he was subsequently accepted as a painter of flowers at the Academy in 1746. However, it is his studies from life, such as this one, that made his reputation. J.-A. Portail combines black stone with red chalk with a renowned virtuosity, creating an elegance of rare dynamics. The quality of this standing gentleman also lies in the controlled heaviness of the drape of his coat. It is also the naturalness of a banal movement, where the main figure seems to be trying to catch, challenge or make his way through the street. All of the above qualities make these figures highly sought-after drawings during the artist's lifetime, and their success has not waned since.
