He grew up at the Royal Manufacture of Sèvres where he learned drawing at an early age. He was then influenced by the art of miniature painting, which became his specialty. He was a student of Joseph-Marie Vien at the Royal Academy. This Young Reading Girl, drawn around 1780 with three pencils, shows with studied grace the fullness of a French golden age. The three-quarter back position, full of modesty, favors the luxury of the toilet, while the book the young woman holds in her hand indicates a spiritual inclination. The famous drawing has often represented the colors of 18th century French art and saved Le Guay from undeserved neglect.
