Pierre OZANNE (Brest, 1737 - 1813) Head of a black man with a turban Black stone and white chalk highlights on beige paper. Bears an old attribution "Van Loo" on the old mount. Glued in full on a Glomy mount, stamped lower right (L.1119). 22,4 x 16,4 cm Provenance: - Hill-Stone Inc, South Dartmouth, Mass. - Former Robin R. Henry Collection. Brother of Nicolas-Marie Ozanne, after passing through Vien's workshop in Paris, Pierre became master of drawing for the Brest marine guards in 1757. He embarked in 1771 on the frigate "Le Flore" and discovered Africa (he made numerous drawings and portraits of blacks on the island of Gorée) and America. In 1776, he left on the corvette "La Boussole" to the Canary Islands. He also went to the French West Indies. He drew the heroic episodes of the French squadron's battles against the English during the American War of Independence.
