François-André VINCENT (Paris, 1746 - 1816) Seated... - Lot 194 - Ader
François-André VINCENT (Paris, 1746 - 1816) Seated man holding a book, study for a Saint Jerome Sanguine and white chalk highlights on beige paper. Signed in pen and brown ink in the lower left corner: "Vincent". (Glued in full on its old mounting, folds). 38,2 x 52,9 (51,3 at the bottom) Provenance: Anonymous sale, Me Lhuillier, Paris, Hôtel Drouot, November 29, 2021, no. 26, reproduced. Pupil of Vien and admirer of Fragonard, Vincent obtained the Prix de Rome in 1768 and stayed in Italy for four years. He was admitted to the Academy and taught at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and at the Ecole Polytechnique. Our Academy is a preparatory study for his pleasure piece at the Academy, Saint Jerome in the Desert, dated ca. 1776-1777 and preserved in Montpellier at the Musée Fabre (inv. 835.4.1) (see: Jean-Pierre Cuzin and Isabelle Meyer-Michalon, Vincent entre Fragonard et David, Paris, Édition Arthéna, 2013). The first idea for this painting, dated 1774, shows with variations in position a bearded and old Saint Jerome, as he will appear in the work conceived just after his return from Italy, around 1776-1777 (op. cit., n°133D). It is interesting to note that Vincent finally adopted the pose of this academic figure to represent his Saint Jerome. Our drawing can be compared to the academy in red chalk dated 1772 and kept at the École des Beaux-Arts (op. cit., n° 57D, reproduced p. 29).
