François André VINCENT (Paris, 1746 - 1816) Head... - Lot 195 - Ader
François André VINCENT (Paris, 1746 - 1816) Head of Seneca in profile after the antique Sanguine. Signed and dated lower left in brown ink "Vincent del. 1773-" and titled lower right "-- Seneque -". At the bottom left, a handwritten label: "Vincent times. andré born in Paris 1746-1816 Student of Vien Gd. Prix de Peinture 1768 ". (Some foxing, horizontal fold at the level of the jaw, pasted in full on an old mount). 38,4 x 32 cm Bibliography : J.-P. Cuzin, I. Mayer-Michalon, "Quelques nouveaux Vincent," in Onzièmes rencontres internationales du Salon du Dessin, De David à Delacroix. Du tableau au dessin, Paris, 2016, p. 91 and p. 207, ill. 3. The studies after ancient sculptures made by Vincent in Rome are "splendidly scholastic," as Jean-Pierre Cuzin puts it (op. cit., p. 51). The tight modeling retranscribes the hardness of the marble. This technique was admired by Vincent in his time (op. cit., p. 51). Cuzin lists a twin brother of this drawing, a Head of Cicero in profile after the antique (op. cit., no. 114D, reproduced. p. 367).
