Alexandre-Evariste FRAGONARD (Grasse, 1780... - Lot 202 - Ader
Alexandre-Evariste FRAGONARD (Grasse, 1780 - Paris, 1850) Portrait of Louis-Auguste Auber (1785-1871) Black stone, estompe, heightened with white. Signed lower right, annotated on the reverse "Auguste Auber, wounded in the Russian campaign, 1789-1857" and on the mount in black pencil "Brother of Louis Auber composer". 17 cm in diameter on a rectangular sheet of 26 x 20.5 cm Alexandre-Evariste Fragonard is the son of Jean-Honoré Fragonard, and a pupil of David. From 1806, he works with the architect Poyet and then collaborates with the Manufacture de Sèvres. In 1836, he was commissioned by the Château de Versailles to paint The Battle of Marignan. Louis-Auguste Auber (1785-1857), was seriously wounded in 1806 at the battle of Jena. This allows us to date our drawing before 1806. Louis-Auguste Auber (1785-1871) was the brother of the famous composer Daniel-François-Esprit Auber (1782-1871). The inscriptions on the back of the frame contain errors concerning the date of birth of the model and the place where he received his wound, as well as a confusion between his brother Esprit Auber and Louis Auber (1720-1800), first violin of the Opera.
