Related work: Jean-Baptiste de Champaigne, Philippe de Champaigne (1602-1674), oil on canvas, size 120 x 91 cm, Paris, Musée du Louvre, inv. INV1142. Adèle Chavassieu d'Haudebert, a native of Niort, is best known for her work as an enamel painter. In addition to her presence at the Paris Salon between 1806 and 1824, the painter is noted for her enamel reproductions of famous paintings in the remarkable collection of the Italian lawyer, Count Sommariva (1762-1826). The brilliant patron commissioned, both to flatter his position as a collector and to have continuous access to his collection, reproductions of his paintings in enamel to the greatest specialists in this technique of the time. Our artist executed seventy-nine of them. Among the paintings in this collection was a copy of Philippe de Champaigne's self-portrait, considered at the time to be in the artist's hand and kept in the Count's Paris gallery. The fate of these two works is closely linked because both the painting and the enamelled medallion were sold by Count Sommariva's daughter-in-law, Emilia Seillière, who dispersed a large part of the collection in 1839.
