Paul BALZE (Rome, 1815 - Paris, 1884) after... - Lot 24 - Ader
Paul BALZE (Rome, 1815 - Paris, 1884) after Jean-Auguste Dominique INGRES (Montauban, 1780 - Paris, 1867) Venus anadyomene Painted enamel on copper plate, pink counter enamel Signed lower right: "P. BALZE. Pxt / EMAIL" and annotated at the bottom left: "INGRES.INVt". On the back, the inscription: "Paul Balze pinx Email paris 1854." Size : 21,3 x 12,2 cm Provenance: Jacques-Édouard Gatteaux (1788-1881), sculptor, medallist, founder and friend of Ingres. Reference work: Jean-Auguste Dominique Ingres, Venus anadyomene, 1808-1848, oil on canvas, dim. 163 x 92 cm, Chantilly, Musée Condé, inv. PE 433. This enamel plaque in pastel colors is based on Jean-Auguste Ingres' famous painting Venus Anadyomene, begun in 1808 while he was a resident at the Académie de France in Rome. This work, an ode to Botticelli, was not completed by Ingres until 1848. It was presented at the Exposition Universelle in 1855 before being purchased by the Duke of Aumale in 1879. However, the execution of this enamelled plaque by Paul Balze took place before its public exhibition in 1854. It must be said that the painter Paul Balze, like his brother Raymond, was one of the great master's closest pupils and collaborators. He not only retouched Ingres' works, but also made copies, either of his original works (such as the Apotheosis of Homer), or at his request, of old works. He is the author of the copy of the frescoes of the Vatican Lodges and the Chambers of Raphael exhibited at the Pantheon in 1847.
