Papillon" and an inscription in red pencil: "veteran before Capsus". 3 different sizes : 110 x 137 cm - 110 x 38 cm -110 x 60 cm (approximately) Gustave Surand studied in the studio of Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921). He made his debut at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1881 and presented Breton seascapes, Spanish interiors and genre scenes. In 1884, he obtained a grant which enabled him to go to Tunisia where he painted canvases with antique subjects. On his return, he specialized in animal painting, particularly in the representation of wild animals, as well as in orientalist scenes. Until 2011, our set adorned since 1905 the walls of a Parisian restaurant at 6 rue de Caumartin, the Bar Romain, which takes its name from this decor.
