Marie-Jeanne d'AUMALE (1638-1756) secretary... - Lot 250 - Ader
Marie-Jeanne d'AUMALE (1638-1756) secretary to Mme de Maintenon. L.A.S., February 15, 1710, to the bishop of Chartres [Charles-François des Monstiers de Mérinville]; 2 pages in-4, address with red wax seal. About the birth of Louis XV. She tells the bishop good news: "the Duchess of Burgundy has given us today a prince who is doing well, Madame de Maintenon is quite tired of it, she is however quite well". She regrets not being able to go and embrace [for her taking of the veil] "my Sister of St. Paul, [...] I will take part in her joy from afar [...] we will pray to God in St. Cyr that he will fill her with his graces, and that her example will attract us all one day. I am very grateful, Sir, that you were kind enough to put for me in a letter from Madame, everything that was given to Msg. the Bishop of Chartres [Paul Godet des Marais] was precious and I would not choose anything in particular, Md. de Maintenon was kind enough to give me a small gold cross with relics of St. Sulpice"... [Charles-François des Monstiers de Mérinville had taken the succession of his uncle Paul Godet des Marais (1690-1709) at the head of the diocese of Chartres. The latter, close to Madame de Maintenon, was one of the spiritual directors of the Royal House of Saint Louis at Saint-Cyr; he died on September 26, 1709; his nephew suggested to his relatives that they keep a souvenir of him].
