Recreational alphabet. - Lot 56
Recreational alphabet. Without address, place, or date. [France. ca. 1840]. Engraved and hand-colored paper plate with brush (66.5 x 39 cm approx.), cut into (24) cards (13 x 8.3 cm approx.). Cards of alphabet, very finely engraved, resulting from a rectangular plate, cut out in vertical rectangles. The coloring was done on the original board, the watercolor edges and the separation lines allow its reconstruction. A black initial centered at the head of the map, an illustration occupying two thirds of the map, a large legend underlined by two other occurrences on the map, and a syllabary line referring to the legends. I, J, on the same map, no W. These rare cards, dating from the first half of the 19th century, were applied to a sheet and have traces of it on the corners of the reverse, as well as some reinforcing bands.
