The Contrasts. Alphabet dedicated to childhood. Without... - Lot 66 - Ader
The Contrasts. Alphabet dedicated to childhood. Without address. Paris. [Circa 1820]. (9,7 x 8,4 cm). Leporello of (15) engraved flaps: period turquoise paper boards with gilt foliage and star motifs, oval label, bearing the engraved title, applied to the first board. Unique and very rare edition. The first two engraved flaps show an alphabet underlined by numbers and framed by Pierrot and Harlequin holding palms. Two engravings per flap follow, showing couples and full-length figures in an architectural or vegetal setting. The characters or feelings mentioned at the head of the double illustrations [in alphabetical order] are usually opposed to the captions at the foot. Examples: Animosity, Benevolence, Contentment, Despair, in the upper part, The Dance, The Walse [sic], French Consolation, English Consolation, at the bottom of the engravings. No copy referenced in libraries. Attractive and rare work, well preserved, a small label seems to be missing in the center of the second plate.
