Die ersten Lectionen des deutschen Sprachunterrichts. [The first lessons of German language teaching]. Im Gebrauch der deutschen Anfangsclassen der kaiserlich-japanesischen Academie von Daïgaku-Nanko. [Used by the German beginning classes of the Imperial Japanese Academy of Daïgaku-Nanko]. Jedo. [Tokyo]. 1870. In-4 (29 x 21.4 cm). 2 ff. 8 pp. and 1 f. 24 pp. [printed on double sheets of japanese paper]: covers of fine cream japanese paper, bound in Japanese style with a blue silk thread. Title in kanji applied to the reverse of the first cover. (Binding of the period). Modern protective navy cloth slipcase in three parts. Unique edition of the greatest rarity. First German primer published in Japan. Writing based on that of Gottfried Wagener (1831-1892), professor of German at the Daïgaku-Nanko Academy, established in 1869, University of the South, now University of Tokyo. A precious early example of the opening of Japan to the world with the restoration of the Meiji emperor, from 1868, who made education compulsory and sent Japanese students to Western universities. The Prussians will supervise the national army. Extreme refinement of the printing on a very fine doubled Japanese paper. After the title in blue, pages in black separated in two parts. Gothic alphabets and syllabaries in the first, underlined alphabet of phrases and words, an alphabet in print and first readings in quatrains and prose, interspersed with large Gothic initials of an alphabet continuing throughout the second part. No copy referenced in world libraries. A very well preserved copy, in its original Japanese binding, with minimal worm work on the second cover, and enclosed in an elegant Japanese slipcase.
