Nieuw Letterspel voor Kinderen. New Alphabet Game for Children. N. 62. Without address, place or date. [Brepols, Turnhout, Belgium, ca. 1830.] (43 x 33.8 cm). Woodcut and stenciled fine paper plate. Rare Flemish-French animal primer plate by a publishing house founded in 1796 in Turnhout, at the time in the French department of Deux-Nèthes. After the fall of Napoleon, this department was divided between Flemish Belgium and the Netherlands. Twenty-five woodcut rectangles with the initial accompanied by its minuscule, at the head, and a superb rustic illustration colored with red, yellow and blue lines. The legend, at the foot of the frame, corresponds to the occurrence in Dutch followed by the translation in French. Aap - Monkey, Bok - Goat, Crocodil - Crocodile [sic] to Zwijn - Pig. P. J. and L. Buijnsters, in their book "Speelprenten en papieren speelgoed in Nederland (1640-1920)". Waanders. Zwolle. 2005, state that the woodcuts were made by A. Cranendoncq in 1829. A young Cornelie wrote her name in ink at the head of the plate in the 19th century. Reinforcement at the edge, on the reverse.
