New large picturesque alphabet for good little children. Decorated with numerous engravings. Amable Rigaud, Editor. 40, rue Sainte-Anne. Paris. [1860]. In-4 (31,4 x 22,4 cm). 47, (1) pp., (8) pp. and (4) plates printed on verso, all engraved and colored: publisher's chromolithographed boards on a background of green and gilt squares, Harlequin carrying a hood of toys framed by illustrated cobblestones, on the first board, decorative motifs and illustrations in the corner circles, on the second. Sought-after alphabet book in period colors. Beginning with alphabets, vowels, consonants, syllables, easy sentences, first readings, animal calls, it is completed with songs and stories and advice to the little ones, illustrated with black engravings, with all the texts separated into syllables in a progressive way. Interspersed are twelve pages of fine colored engravings, with the initial at the top, highlighted with the occurrence separated into syllables, from A, A-veu-gle, to Z, Zou-a-ves, with, for the N, Na-po-lé-on, standing, arms crossed, on a cliff. The last four engraved and colored plates illustrate the second part: Au clair de la Lu-ne to Il pleut Ber-gè-re. A last page of multiplication table ends the work. Only one copy in the Bibliothèque nationale de France. Corners rubbed. Inside hinges reinforced.
