New instructive and picturesque alphabet. Or... - Lot 83 - Ader
New instructive and picturesque alphabet. Or First children's book containing a large number of reading exercises and a selection of moral stories. Illustrated with 108 beautiful engravings. Théodore Lefèvre, Editor. Rue des Poitevins. Paris. [Circa 1865]. Typography and stereotype of Crété fils. Corbeil. In-4 (27,5 x 17,5 cm). 48 pp. publisher's burgundy percaline boards, stamped black and gilt decoration on the first board, black decoration on the second, bevelled boards, gilt edges. First edition in publisher's percaline binding with bevelled boards. Abecédaire abundantly illustrated with colored stencil engravings. Anonymous work, we know that Théodore Lefèvre often wrote himself the didactic works he published for the youngest, using the pseudonym of Mrs Doudet. The title is identical to several works, published later under this pseudonym, but texts and illustrations are different here. A frontispiece "La Dînette" and four pages of alphabets precede the illustrated alphabet: an alphabet of animals, it includes three letters per page, in column, with on each side of the initial, two illustrated occurrences, from Ane, Aigle to Wolo, Wermillon. At the end of the book, stories illustrated with large engravings. We recognize on one of the lithographs the signature of Émile Bayard (1837-1891). Most of them are engraved by Gillot. Uncommon in period colors. Minimal rubbing to the binding, inner hinges cracked and a small crack at the foot of page 33, without affecting the text.
