New method of teaching A. B. C. And to spell to the children. By amusing them with pleasant figures and suitable for making them progress in reading and writing almost without a teacher. At Devaux Libraire. Maison de l'Egalité n° 181. In Paris. 1793. Small in-8 (22 x 13,2 cm approximately). (16) pp. : waiting covers of fine paper. Remarkable abécédaire of revolutionary period entirely engraved. It includes a frontispiece, L'Oiseau privé, an engraved and illustrated title page, two illustrated alphabetical plates and four pages of twenty images each with captions. Title and plates illustrated, engraved with the vat on one side of the leaves. The initials of the alphabetical box are decorated with fine engravings showing the occurrences whose names are engraved in cursive on the drawing. Following are the common letters, syllables, an edifying text for the dear child who can read, Arabic characters & Roman numerals & finances, completed with the resolutions of a young man. The anonymous author writes a traditional and Christian primer, the characters depicted are noble, without any mention to the upheavals of the time and the new standards, far from the Terror and the ravages of the revolutionary courts of this year 1793. The diffusion of this work could only be very limited. Only one copy, in the Bibliothèque nationale de France, dated year II [1793-1794], was digitized. The engravings bear the same subjects, but reversed, they are pale naïve copies with no relation to the engravings of this work. In its fragile original booklet with folds on the upper outer corner continuing on the first few leaves and missing on the lower corner without affecting the text. Tear on the last leaf, without missing.
