Small funny geography. New alphabet book. Offering for each letter of the alphabet a colored map with the explanation of each one. Librairie de l'enfance et de la jeunesse. P.- C. Lehuby, Bookseller-Publisher. 55, rue de Seine. Paris. [About 1845]. Typography of Prevot and Drouard. Saint-Denis. In-12 oblong (13,3 x 18 cm). Faux-title, title, 73 pp. and (25) colored plates : plum-colored percaline with cold-stamped double framing on the boards and gilt decoration, gilt-stamped title on the first board, gilt edges (Binding of the period). Unique edition of a rare primer of countries, or geographical places, illustrated with twenty-five plates out of text, on strong paper, engraved and colored. For each letter, the map is followed by two to three pages of explanations, precise and simple, and of historical interest. In large typography, it begins with the name of the country and has an ornate initial at the top. For each country, the provinces, capitals, rivers, mountain ranges, etc. In a few lines, the anonymous author summarizes the country or the region with sometimes some patriotic or anti-Austro-Prussian intonations. He specifies for Prussia that it "still possesses the canton of Neufchâtel, in Switzerland", which makes it possible to date the work from before the independence of 1848. A, Germany, "a part of the Austrian Empire [...] 12,329,000 nationals", B, Belgium, C, Cyclades, Candia, "under the domination of Turkey, there is a French consulate in Chania", Warsaw, "formerly capital of ancient Poland, fallen to the power of Russia", Yonne and the 86 departments of France and Zara, capital of Dalmatia. Refinement of the coloring and elegant large typography. A sought-after geographical primer of which only two copies are in libraries worldwide: Bibliothèque Diderot in Lyon and University of California in Los Angeles. Faint scattered foxing on the text leaves, first inner hinge cracked, golds of the first cover tarnished.
