False title, frontispiece, title, 294 pp. 36 engraved plates : half-basin, gilt fillets on the spine, title page, marbled paper boards (Binding of the period). First edition of an alphabet book with nine illustrated alphabets, each one on the same model. For each alphabet: four engraved plates, each comprising six fine detailed engravings, and a didactic text for each illustrated letter. The alphabets are not titled, but are easily recognizable. Alphabet of the trades, alphabet of the animals (Donkey to Zebu), alphabet of the gardener (Fruit trees to Zaccon [plum tree]), alphabet of the fables (The Miser and his treasure to The Zeal), alphabet of the farm (Bees to Zaccon), bird alphabet (Aigle à Zimbly), game alphabet (Arc à Zin ou le jeu de la savatte), mythological alphabet (Apollon à Zéphir) and historical alphabet (Alexandre à Zenon). The only four copies referenced in libraries bear the date of 1837. Rubbing on the boards, more pronounced on the cuts, minimal faint foxing on the text pages, frontispiece and plate opposite page 12 with small childish essays in carmine watercolor.
