ABADIE [-LANDEL] (Pierre). The Alphabet of the army. Le Nouvel Essor. 40 rue des Saints-Pères. Paris. 1916 (47,5 x 31,5 cm). 6 lithographed and stenciled plates on laid paper, enclosed in a modern portfolio, half black Skivertex with corners, ochre cloth, triple flap, gilt filets and gilt title on the spine. Rare complete set of six large plates drawn by the painter and engraver Pierre Abadie-Landel (1896-1972). The titles are as follows: 1- L'Automobiliste du camp retranché, where a soldier tries to start his vehicle marked C.A.M.A. [Centre d'Approvisionnement de Matériel Automobile], beautiful gradation of bright pink sky where the dome of the Invalides is cut out. 2- The Railway Guard, military, bayonet on the gun, with the initials G.V.C. on his red armband, Guard of the Communication Ways, where more than 200 000 men, from 1914, had been mobilized for this service, train in background. 3- The Military Nurse, in a hospital room, a soldier with glasses examines his syringe. 4- The Factory Worker, a worker is running after the streetcar marked Paris, smoking factory behind him and bundles of shells in frame, under the title, letters M. a. M. : Monument aux Morts. 5- The R.A.T.: Regiment of Trench Artillery, an artilleryman (the only ones in night blue uniforms), stops a frightened civilian. 6- The Secretary of Staff, S.E.M., a soldier, pipe in mouth, reading the newspaper, shadow of Paris and metro station in background. Plates, signed and dated in the lithograph, with different ornate frames and tones of blues, turquoise and the famous madder red, lithographed on Ingres d'Arches MBM paper and hand-colored with stencil. In perfect condition, plates preserved in an elegant portfolio.
